Jyväskylä Dance festival: Funmi Adewole lecture Contemporary dance as a transnational practice

During this presentation ‘Funmi Adewole posits contemporary dance as a transnational practice and analyses the politics that this positionality brings to light. As a transnational practice she argues, contemporary dance is defined by the power dynamics of its institutional context as much as its aesthetics. She discusses the significance of contemporary dance as social and artistic practice using examples from contemporary dance as practiced in Europe and in Africa.

Funmi Adewole is a senior lecturer in Dance at De Montfort University, Leicester, where she gained her PhD in Dance Studies. She is also performer and a dance dramaturge. Her research interests include theorising of Dance of the African Diaspora in professional contexts, Africanist aesthetics in choreographic practice and the notion of contemporary dance.
