Education is not reserved for the few and privileged — it belongs to all of us.

The guiding idea of the book Sivistyksen vuoksi (For the Sake of Education/Civilization) is that the pursuit of education, both on an individual and societal level, builds a meaningful and good life. The book, co-edited by the University of Jyväskylä’s resource-wise community JYU.Wisdom and the Jyväskylä Festival, will be published on the opening day of the festival’s 70th anniversary year.

The 32 contributors explore the evolving role of education from a variety of perspectives, shedding light on its essence and importance as both a personal and societal aspiration. Among the authors are Tarja Halonen, M. A. Numminen, Jarkko Martikainen, Kirsi Piha, Juha Hurme, Julia Thurén, and Piia Viitanen.

At the launch event, the editors will share insights about the making of the book, and Kaarlo Hildén, Rector of the University of the Arts Helsinki, will comment on the publication and Finnish ideals of education.
