Creativity Without Growth Seminar

While activists, academics, and some politicians are calling for an end to perpetual economic growth on a finite planet, it’s not always clear what that would look like. The capitalist realism that cages our thinking about the future makes it difficult to think beyond the confines of endless GDP growth as a narrative for the future. Though some have, rather influentially, articulated a path forwards. The environmental economist Tim Jackson is one of them. In his book Prosperity Without Growth, he argues for a world in which we revalue “care, craft, and creativity” as types of work that can with a post-growth future. In this talk it will be explored, what that argument means given that most art, culture, craft, and creativity has been reduced to their possibility to contribute to economic growth as part of the creative industries.

The seminar is organised by Cultural Policy (JYU) and Cultural Center Villa Rana. Presentation will be given by Senior Lecturer Christiaan De Beukelaer from University of Melbourne (see: https://christiaan.debeukelaer.net). The presentation lasts for 45 minutes and will be followed by open discussion on the topic.

Seminar is open for all. Language is English. Welcome!
