Jyväskylä Dance festival: Lemons

Rutimo Collective is known for approaching movement, dance, and performances through their mutual background in Hip Hop dance. Their aim is to enhance the representation of street dance forms among the performing arts while regarding the origins of Hip Hop culture as well as recognizing the organic spaces it exists in. Part of their process is to consider how Hip Hop culture can be brought onto a stage, out of its organic space, and they strive for a way of working and performing that respects the culture.

“Lemons” is a continuum to the collective’s debut piece “Peaches”. The piece approaches the intersection of womanhood, body, touch, and Hip Hop. The collective will study their own relationships as cis women with touch, its contexts, notions, and norms: how to touch oneself? Which body parts can one touch and how? What sexualizes public touch, the observer’s gaze or the intent of the one touching? The piece asks the viewer about their assumptions of women, their bodies, and touch.
